Miss Independent
Meaning of Independent: Not
dependent on anything else for function or validity etc
In the 21st Century the word
miss independent has been thrown around like a basketball, both men and women
have used it to justify their actions. In 2008 the American R&B singer
Ne-Yo released a song describing the independent woman, a woman he would love
to be with. This is a woman who has achieved and is still on that ladder of
achieving more. She’s the woman who has her finances all set, driving the
latest car model and living in the leaf suburbs, she seats in the big boys
table.
I’m sure you all have that lady friend who’s branded independence
from head to toe, she doesn’t have to
tell you because it’s like a perfume scent that engulfs a room in its exotic
journey. This is a woman who caters for her own bills, lives the life she wants;
I could say she’s the woman who doesn’t need a man by her side.
This past weekend I sat at the same table with this
woman. She talked about her life, the places she's visited and her recent
promotion. This woman can talk and if you are not the listening and patient
type your conversation would not go passed hi. I listened keenly and
once in a while contributed to the conversation.
One thing caught my attention. She’s single by forced
circumstances and has the perception that she doesn't need a man in her life. When
she uttered those words from her mouth, my mouth gasped open I couldn't believe
what I was hearing. She noticed my shock and quickly made it clear. She stated
that she has tried being in relationships but all the men she was interested in were interested in her money.
As I write this blog, she’s just left the hospital
where she's just had insemination. Just like she walked the path to build her
career, she’s decided to walk the path of parenthood too. I feel sorry for her because this is a woman who wants the entire package; husband, children, family and a home but cannot have it all.
She's not alone on the path of loneliness of being miss independent. Many women are taking that road everyday. They get into those flashy cars after a long day at work, go to a lonely home where no one is there to welcome them, pour a bottle of red wine and watch single ladies. I can hear all those clicks and curses but hey it's the truth. It's the same script played by each miss independent.
Miss independent walks around with her head held high, 6 inch heels with the world in her palms but deep down her heart when the entire world has gone to sleep, she's a very lonely girl. She has no one to turn to, even that man who's always there to satisfy her sexual desires is at his house.
Each of this miss independents have a story to tell, reasons why they are who they are but one thing is for sure all of them are looking for fulfillment.
